Donyall Dickey: Why Strong Student-Teacher Relationships Drive Academic Achievement

Donyall Dickey is the founder and CEO of Educational Epiphany, a Washington, DC-based curriculum design organization he launched in 2008 and expanded internationally in 2017. A native of Texas City, Texas, Dr. Dickey began his career as a third-grade teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools before leading schools in Baltimore City and Howard County, Maryland, to record-setting academic gains. He later served as Assistant Superintendent and as the School District of Philadelphia’s Regional Superintendent overseeing 36 principals. Donyall Dickey has authored a wide range of curricular resources, including The Integrated Approach to Student Achievement and The Universal Language of Literacy. His career-long focus on instructional leadership underscores why student-teacher relationships remain central to sustained gains in student achievement.

Student-teacher relationships are a pillar of the educational experience because they influence how students perceive learning, interact in the classroom, and respond to academic expectations. While curriculum, teaching strategies, and assessments contribute to student success, the quality of daily interactions between educators and students also plays a significant role.

Positive relationships help create an environment where students feel respected, supported, and encouraged to participate actively in the learning process.

Trust and mutual respect form the foundation of a productive student-teacher relationship. Students are more likely to engage in classroom activities when they trust that their teachers are committed to helping them succeed.

This trust develops through consistent communication, fairness, and respectful interactions that help students feel valued and supported. When students know they can ask questions, express uncertainty, and receive constructive guidance without fear of embarrassment, they feel more confident participating in the learning process.

This confidence encourages them to engage in learning opportunities that strengthen their understanding of academic concepts.

Positive student-teacher relationships also strengthen student motivation and classroom engagement. Students often perform at higher levels when they believe their teachers recognize their potential and are genuinely invested in their success.

Encouragement, recognition of effort, and meaningful feedback help reinforce students’ confidence in their abilities, making them more willing to approach academic challenges with determination and a desire to improve.

As students become more motivated, they are generally more comfortable participating in classroom discussions, asking questions, and contributing ideas during lessons. This active participation allows teachers to assess student understanding, clarify misconceptions, and extend learning through meaningful dialogue.

As a result, students become active participants in their own education rather than passive recipients of information.

Student-teacher relationships also influence the effectiveness of classroom instruction while encouraging resilience in learning. Teachers who understand their students’ strengths, learning needs, and areas requiring additional support can make more informed teaching decisions.

This understanding allows educators to adjust explanations, provide targeted guidance, and select learning activities that help students develop a deeper understanding of new concepts.

As teaching becomes more responsive to individual learning needs, students are likely to view mistakes as a natural part of the learning process rather than as signs of failure. Although academic challenges are inevitable, supportive guidance and encouragement help students develop the confidence to persist through difficulties.

This positive approach motivates students to continue working toward improvement.

Clear communication further strengthens student-teacher relationships while promoting positive classroom behavior. Teachers who explain assignments thoroughly, provide timely feedback, and encourage ongoing communication help students understand classroom expectations and learning objectives.

Open communication also gives students opportunities to seek clarification before misunderstandings affect their progress.

When students understand expectations and feel valued by their teachers, they may demonstrate responsibility, cooperation, and self-discipline. This respectful and supportive classroom environment supports positive contributions to the learning community, while reducing disruptions that interfere with teaching and learning.

Strong student-teacher relationships contribute to a positive school culture that extends beyond individual classrooms. When respectful interactions become a consistent part of the educational environment, students experience greater continuity across subjects and grade levels.

Teachers who are committed to building supportive relationships help create a school culture of collaboration, academic growth, and mutual respect.

Such consistency reinforces positive behaviors and enables students to remain engaged throughout their educational journey.

School leaders also play a role in supporting relationship-based teaching. Educational leaders help teachers strengthen their communication, classroom management, and student engagement skills through professional development.

Leadership that values teaching quality and positive relationships creates an environment where educators are better equipped to support student achievement.

Student-teacher relationships are closely linked to academic success. Positive relationships help establish trust, strengthen motivation, encourage participation, and create learning environments where students feel confident pursuing academic challenges.

Educators who show respect, set high expectations, and provide support help students engage in learning and achieve academic success.
